FAQs

Similarly to plumbers and builders, mechanics can start their own business or become self-employed and enjoy the benefits of being their own boss.

Capital Allowances can be claimed on assets used for your business and work, such as a car, van, truck or plant & equipment. You can claim an allowance of up to 100% per annum on certain items. Also assets you owned before you started the business may also be claimed if you use them now for your business.

As a self-employed person, HMRC says you can claim “reasonable” costs of food and drink when you're travelling for business, if: your business is by nature itinerant (for example, you're a commercial traveller).

HMRC allow the full costs of your mobile phone bills as a tax allowable expense, providing the mobile phone contract is held in the name of the limited company and the payments are made directly from the business bank account. This applies even if the phone is used for personal use as well as business use.

You will require your own vehicle and tools alongside business insurance and you should be good to go.

For example: the average HGV technician rate at the moment is around £25/hour. If you work Monday to Friday, 10hrs per day that equates to 50hrs X £25 = £1250 per week. That’s £5000 per month.

A guide to becoming a contract technician

Freelancing, contracting, whatever you want to call it, it’s widely predicted almost half of the UK’s working population will soon be self-employed. As the freelance revolution gathers pace, technicians like you are also choosing to leave permanent jobs to work for themselves. Everyone has a different reason for making the switch, but here are some of the most popular reasons:

  • Better pay Our top contractors are earning up to £95,000 a year
  • Add experience By working in different environments on different brands
  • More flexibility To spend time with your family or doing things you love
  • Greater appreciation Your skills are in demand and you’ll feel wanted in the workshop
  • No more same old same old You’ve had the same routine for too long and you’re ready for a change
  • Upskill You want to improve yourself and benefit from training opportunities that contracting brings.

We take your career and skillset seriously

Like anything in life, contracting isn’t for everybody so before you make the jump we’ll be here to consult, go through the pro’s and con’s to ensure you will be on the right path and you are making the right choice.

Taking the first step, especially when leaving a permanent role, can be terrifying but once you’ve made the move, trust us, you won’t look back.
