Similarly to plumbers and builders, mechanics can start their own business or become self-employed and enjoy the benefits of being their own boss.
Capital Allowances can be claimed on assets used for your business and work, such as a car, van, truck or plant & equipment. You can claim an allowance of up to 100% per annum on certain items. Also assets you owned before you started the business may also be claimed if you use them now for your business.
As a self-employed person, HMRC says you can claim “reasonable” costs of food and drink when you're travelling for business, if: your business is by nature itinerant (for example, you're a commercial traveller).
HMRC allow the full costs of your mobile phone bills as a tax allowable expense, providing the mobile phone contract is held in the name of the limited company and the payments are made directly from the business bank account. This applies even if the phone is used for personal use as well as business use.
You will require your own vehicle and tools alongside business insurance and you should be good to go.
For example: the average HGV technician rate at the moment is around £25/hour. If you work Monday to Friday, 10hrs per day that equates to 50hrs X £25 = £1250 per week. That’s £5000 per month.
